This Document is an excerpt from Nelson T. Smith’s Book, “Dauber – Deibert – Dibert”

16. John7 DIBERT (Johann Christoph6 DEIBERT, George Michael5 DAUBER, Hans Michael4, Andreas3 DEUBER, David2 DAUBER, Martin1) was born October 08, 1783 in Washington County, Maryland, and died February 11, 1852 in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. He married (1) Mary Elizabeth CRETZINGER May 19, 1808 in Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland. She was born October 15, 1785 in Washington County, Maryland, and died November 30, 1836 in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. He married (2) Martha Abt. 1850 in Ohio. She was born 1793 in Virginia, and died Aft. July 1872.

John Deibert was born in Washington County, Maryland, the third son (Child) of Johann Christoph Dauber and Eva Kunigunda Reich. He married Mary Elizabeth Cretzinger, May 19, 1808 in Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland. They had a daughter born in 1809, given name unknown, and a second Daughter, Elizabeth, born September 1, 1811 in Washington County, Maryland. John sold land he owned in Washington County, Maryland in 1812 to his older brother Christian and the family moved to Champaign County, Ohio.

John purchased February 6, 1813, a parcel of land, SE 114 of Section 29 in Champaign County from the land office in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, listing his residence as Montgomery County, Ohio. This parcel of land includes in it's north east boundary, the intersection of Snyder- Domer Road, Thackery Road and Terre Haute Road, often referred to as turkey-foot or chicken-foot crossing, in present day Clark County. His second purchase of land, February 6, 1817, was the NE 114 Section 23 in Champaign County [both sections are now in German Township, Clark County,

Ohio] listing his former residence as Maryland. This location on Section 23 NE 114 became the site of the family homestead in Ohio. Both records of Sections of land purchased were received at the Clark County Recorder's Office June 21st, 1871, with the first recorded July 7th, 1871 and the latter recorded July 6th, 1871.

This John Dibert land became part of Clark County in 1818, when Clark County was formed from parts of Champaign, Greene and Madison Counties. The homestead established on the NE 114 Section 23 is the present day Stephen Geis farm on Willowdale Road and also serves as the final resting place for John and Mary Elizabeth [Cretzinger] Dibert. John's gravestone lists his date of death, February 11, 1852, Age 68 years, 4 months and 3 days. [this makes his birth date October 8,

1783].

John Dibert married Mary Elizabeth Cretzinger May 19, 1808 at Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland. Elizabeth died November 30, 1836 and is buried beside John on the old homestead. Upon the death of John Dibert, [intestate] he died without a will, his estate was assessed and auctioned with the final proceeds including a sum of money given to his widow Martha. This information indicates that John had remarried after the death of Mary Elizabeth. Unknown at present the maiden name of Martha.

John Dibert arrived in Ohio just in time to serve two weeks military duty in the War ,of 1812. Although he never participated in any battles or skirmishes that are recorded. John served with Capt. John Harrison's Company as a private from Clark County, Ohio.

The Maryland census records, together with the Ohio census records indicate that John and Mary Elizabeth had a total of thirteen children. As follows:

In 1872, George filed to have the property owned by their father partitioned among the living children to provide for care of the mentally unstable siblings. A result of this partitioning was that Elizabeth and Sarah also received funds with which to pay various debts that had accumulated upon their dependencies from the care provided by their several brothers.

  8. Samuel, February 22, 1821, Clark County, Ohio, farmer in Champaign County, owned over 400 acres. Lived north of Terre Haute, Ohio.                 Several of these children experienced periods of mental instability. John, Jr., Joseph, Elizabeth, and Sarah all have records in Clark County Probate Court indicating admission and/or treatment for their mental health problems. Their conditions seem to represent loss of connection with reality, and included transport to the Dayton mental facility for treatment, at least in the case of John, Jr..

Notes of Dibert Mill located on Chapman's Creek:

Peter Prugh, a millwright, builder of grist and saw-mills and farmer in 1811 of Section 4 of Gratis Township, Preble County married Elizabeth Gentis in Champaign County, Ohio on June 1, 1816. It is very likely that since Peter had already established his homestead in Preble County in

1811, he was in the neighborhood of the Gentis Family homestead to build a mill on Chapman's Creek about 1814- 1815. The Daniel Gentis family homestead [160 acres SW 114 Section 23, Twp 4,

Range 10] was adjoining the John Dibert family homestead [NE 114 Section 23, Twp 4, Range 10] of Champaign County [now Clark County]. This mill would have originally been on the land of the Daniel Gentis family, but was later on owned and operated by the Jacob Dibert family as a flour mill operated beginning 1861 [reported in the 1881 Clark County History].
