KNODLE, JOSIAH, Tenant farmer; Sec. 9; P.O. Rockvale: born Dec. 28, 1840, Leaf River Tp., Ogle Co.; he enlisted Sept. 28,1861, with the 3d M. V. I., and was engaged in the battles of Arkansas Post, siege of Vicksburg, and at the fight at Fort Blakely, and all of the minor engagements that his regiment participated in until he was honorably discharged Jan. 23, 1864, by reason of promotion to 1st Sergeant, and transferred to the 1st Mississippi Col’d Inf; which was afterwards known as the 51st United State Col’d Inf.; he was promoted 2d Lieutenant May 5, 1865, and promoted 1st Lieutenant March 12, 1866. for gallant and meritorious services at Fort Blakely, -and was mustered out June 16, 1866 at Baton Rouge, La.; he returned to Ogle Co. and got married May 23, 1869 to Martha A. daughter of Joachim Schelling, of Washington Co., Md. Mrs. K. was born June 10, 1852; they have five children—Lester W., Lottie M., Bertella, Andrew R. and Ida B. Mr. K. belongs to the Republican party.

JOSIAH KNODLE, UNION VETERAN DIES AT MYRTLE HOME
Josiah Knodle, Civil war veteran, and life-long resident of Ogle county, passed away at his home in Myrtle, Wednesday morning, October 24, 1928, aged 87 years, 6 months and 24 days. He was born in Rockvale township, December 28, 1840, the son of William and Rachel Knodle. During the war of the rebellion, Mr. Knodle served four years and eight month in the Union army as First Lieut. Co, H., 3rd Mo., Inf. He was united in marriage to Miss Martha Shelling on February 3rd 1868, to which union eleven children were born. He is survived by his wife and seven children, namely: Mrs. May Kretsinger, Elkton, S.D., Mrs. Ida Palmer, Myrtle; Arthur Knodle of Leaf River; Mrs. Maud Roland, Winnebago; Alva and Harry Knodle, Clifford, N. D., and Chas. Knodle, Myrtle. Funeral services will be held from the M. E. church at Myrtle, Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., with interment at Lightsville cemetery. Rev. C. L. Jaycox, of Rockford, officiating.

Josiah Knodle, 87 years old, a Civil War Veteran, and a lifelong resident of Leaf River Township, died at his home in Myrtle Wednesday morning, Oct. 24, at 5 a.m. after a lingering illness. Mr. Knodle was born near Leaf River Dec. 28, 1840. Mr. Knodle served his country for four years and eight months as a Lieutenant in the Third Missouri Infantry, Company H. Mr. Knodle was united in marriage to Miss Martha Schelling of Leaf River on Feb. 3, 1869; besides his widow he is survived by seven children, four children having preceded him in death; Mrs. Mae Kretsinger of Elkton, S.D., Harry and Alva Knodle of Clifford, N.D., Mrs. Maude Roland of Winnebago, Mrs. Ida Palmer anad Charles of Myrtle, and Arthur Knodle of Leaf River. There are also thirty grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, one brother, Emery of Rockford, and one sister Mrs. Margaret Hayes of Polo. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Myrtle M.E. Church. The Rev. C.J. Jaycox of Rockford had charge of the services. Burial was in Lightsville Cemetery.
